Whether you pack your hospital bag weeks in advance or wait until labor begins, you should have a plan for getting to the hospital and what you should bring. When you’re packing your bag, keep in mind that you’ll most likely only be in the hospital for a few days and that you want to be as comfortable as possible – and don’t forget to bring some clothing for the new person who will be coming home with you!
Before You Arrive
PinnacleHealth recommends that you complete the prenatal checklist before arriving at the hospital.
This checklist contains information about the baby’s pediatrician, any changes to personal information, and information necessary to apply for the newborn’s Social Security number.
In addition, we recommend checking with your insurance provider prior to delivery to determine what is covered and how much you may be expected to pay out of pocket. Insurance policies vary greatly and getting information beforehand prevents unpleasant surprises.
Arriving at the Hospital
If you believe you are in labor, call your doctor for additional instructions.
Once you arrive at Harrisburg Hospital, Labor and Delivery is located on the eighth floor. Use the North Elevators (overhead sign) at the end of the hallway. Please press the button on the call box outside the doors and a nurse will admit you to the unit.
If you are not in labor and do not need assistance and arrive at the hospital between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. Park in the patient/physician garage, enter the hospital through the lobby, proceed through the main hallway and take the North Elevators (at the end of the hall near the Emergency Department) to Labor and Delivery on the 8th floor.
If you are in labor and need assistance and arrive at the hospital between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m, your labor partner may temporarily park at the Emergency Department drop-off. He or she may
escort you to the labor and delivery suite on the 8th floor and then re-park in the patient/physician garage, which is accessible from Front Street.
If you need assistance at any time, please come to the Emergency Department.
Packing a Bag
It’s best to pack your “take to the hospital” bag well in advance of your baby’s due date. The bag should contain items that will make you more comfortable, but please leave your valuable items at home.
At the minimum, your bag should contain:
- Toiletries
- Going-home outfits for you and your baby
- Pajamas, robe and underwear for you, including nursing bras if breastfeeding
- Heavy socks
- Anything that will make you more comfortable, such as pillows or music
- Camera
- “Your Baby’s Birth” guide
